NBA Playoffs: There can only be ONE...

Ok…so the NBA regular season is done. Time for these boys to earn their money, the pretenders are gone and the contenders are ready to make their presence felt. While I was chilling with some of my people the other night of course basketball came up and the debate began. A little conversation and a couple coronas later I was able to determine the way the playoffs should play out. And why would you not believe me? It’s not like I was wrong the last time (see blog post Coming of Age) and if I happen to be wrong forget you ever read this. If I am right, remember where you heard it first.
The San Antonio Spurs should win the title. While all the hype goes other places they quietly amassed the best record in basketball. They have the best coach (Popovich), the best bench, and a reinvigorated Tony Parker who seems a lot faster without that ball and chain holding him back (yeah I said it).The only hope the league has is injury to one of their key players. They can’t win without Ginobli, Parker, or Duncan. But if they are healthy… they win it. I would bet my last Corona.
The Lakers are the most talented team in the NBA but this just isn’t there year. Unless you have a bald head, strange tongue habits and Phil Knights number on speed dial it is impossible to 3peat in the NBA. They have already proven how inconsistent they are on defense and playoff basketball is all about stops.San Antonio having injuries going in the playoffs is the only shot they have.
The Celtics are the equivalent to the Spurs in the east .No matter who makes moves in the eastern conference (New York,Miami) They are still the team to beat. They have the leagues best pg and best defense.Like the Spurs they have been there done that and know what it takes to win….but they aren’t unbeatable. There is only one other team in the east that has a chance .
Now this is the tricky one. You see the Bulls aren’t the most talented team in the league but they play great D. They haven’t been totally healthy all year, but they have Derek Rose which might be all that matters. If he gets hot during the playoffs it’s a wrap. He can win it by himself. He is that DAMN good, and he has teammates who know their role. He might go off a la Isiah Thomas and have the best individual playoff performance since Jordan. He has more heart than Lebron James, more ability than Dwayne Wade and he’s humble enough to avoid any Kobe comparison. Derek Rose . Yeah dude.
So it’s gonna either be the Spurs dominating or Derek Rose changing the game. Either way we better enjoy it . Lord knows we may not have football next year. But that’s another post hombre ….
